Shabbat Chayei Sarah in Israel

It's Parshat Chaya Sarah - Shabbat Hebron. Jews are coming from all over the world, literally, are on their way to Kiryat Arba/Hebron, the city where are forefathers are buried, in Me'Arat Hamachpeila, for the very Shabbat that the story of Avraham's purchase of the Me'Ara and burial of Sarah there is read aloud in the Torah portion. (I know a group from NY that comes each year just for this weekend.)

The entire Kiryat Arba/Hebron community is preparing for their guests of this yearly event.  Every home is full - and when I say full, the average family is having between 35-60 guests in their apartments.  People sleep anywhere and everywhere they can. As they must, for thousands of people are streaming into the city.

The supermarkets have discounted endless products so hosts can feed their guests. Whoever heard of such a thing? In most places they'd be taking advantage and hiking the prices. But here, people are united and truly sharing in this exciting weekend; making it as accessible as possible for as many as possible.

If you won't be joining us this year, think about next.  It's a true happening and a very moving experience to be praying at the very site that is spoken about in the Torah, where our forefathers and mothers are buried. It's an experience you won't want to miss.
